The Significance of Colin Kaepernick’s Afro in the Mist of Michael Vick’s Comments

2 min read

While most news cycles are debating  Michael Vick’s comments regarding Colin Kaepernick’s afro on the video above, the historical significance of his afro cannot be overlooked.

Coming out of segregation the Afro represented black power along with the black power fist, giving African Americans culture and identity. The afro became a powerful political symbol which reflected black pride and a rejection of notions of assimilation and integration to a society that rejected and oppressed.

Kaepernick is merely representing black culture and making a political statement. The political statement is what has the establishment mad. His refusal to bow to a US National Anthem that states, “No refuge could save the hireling and slave,From the terror of flight or the gloom of the grave,And the star-spangled banner in triumph doth wave,O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave.

Plus his speaking out for the least of these and standing up to a criminal justice system that’s scales are tainted with injustice, is what has him without an NFL contract.

Its not about the hair because sports players have sported afros for the past three decades. NBA basketball players Ben Wallace, Kobe Bryant, Michael Beasley and football players Kenny Bell, Randy Moss, have all sported them.

Vick, because of his conditioning based on his harsh punishment of prison for dog fights has been put in the mind set of what Kaepernick refers to as the “Stockholm Syndrome”.  Never mentioning Vick’s name Kaepernick posted to Twitter after Vick’s comments:

Vick later responded on Twitter:
