Every once in a while the oppression and disrespect wells up and a rebellion occurs. Detroit is the upcoming film about the 1967 riot/rebellion in the Motor city. The premiere is scheduled for Tuesday, July 25 nearly 50 years to the day of the rebellion, at the 5,000-seat Fox Theatre. Academy Award winning writer and director of Hurt Locker and Zero Dark Thirty director Kathryn Bigelow is behind the project that stars Jeremy Strong, Chris Chalk, Austin Hébert, Ephraim Sykes, Laz Alonso, Nathan Davis Jr., Malcolm David Kelley, Peyton Alex Smith, and Leon Thomas III. According to Metro Times, “The film was only partially filmed in Detroit. While crews spent about three days in Detroit and Hamtramck in 2016 filming scenes, the bulk of the movie was shot in Massachusetts, thanks to the state’s generous film incentive program. Michigan used to have a competitive film tax incentive program, but it was dropped by Gov. Rick Snyder in 2015.” The film will release nationally on Aug. 4.
